Ilkley in Bloom

This short history was written in 2004 by the then chairman Tony Gilroy.

The Group was formed in the early 1980's under the banner of Ilkley Parish Council and lead by a very energetic councillor, the late Molly Renton. After llkley's entry to the Entente Florale in 1991, the group split from the Parish Council and became an independent voluntary group, as it still is today. Our main objective being to keep Ilkley looking florally good and litter and graffiti free all the year round. We regularly enter the Yorkshire in Bloom competition and use the annual judging as focal points for the year. 2004 sees Ilkley entered in the national Britain in Bloom competition run by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Apart from the main Bradford MDC maintained flower beds in the centre of town, Ilkley in Bloom plant and maintain over 30 beds in the town. Principally these are in the central car park area, but also include the Bus Station, Leeds Road, Skipton Road, etc.

The Group raises its own funds by running various events during the year. Bridge Leagues, Wine Trail, Winter Lunch, etc and is grateful to local business sponsors in the town. The money raised goes into the purchase of plants and material for the many sites in the town.
An Ilkley in Bloom competition is run regularly with Trophies being awarded at a ceremony for the top 3 winners in each category:
  1. Residential Front Gardens visible from the Road
  2. Residential Care/Nursing Homes
  3. Commercial Premises
  4. Public Houses
The winner of the "Best residential front garden visible from road", 2003.
The Group has a very active Committee and a small number of dedicated volunteers. Normal work is carried out on a Sunday morning when the Group meets in Ilkley's central car park at 10.00am. However, work is also carried out during the week and, nearer to judging, in the evenings. More volunteers are always welcome; plant knowledge is useful but not essential. Where possible we work as a group as it is more sociable and that is important to all of us.
